Texas Tech vs. West Virginia. Can the Red Raiders upset WVU? The Big 12 basketball season is well underway, and Texas Tech is looking to pull off an upset against West Virginia. What is the best bet for our NCAAB picks? What is the best sportsbook for this game?

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. West Virginia Mountaineers

Monday, January 25, 2021 – 09:00 PM EST at WVU Coliseum

Texas Tech had a strong start to the regular season, but a few losses in conference play have hurt their stature. Georgetown transfer, Mac McClung has seen a career-high in both points and shooting percentage. Behind him, two other Red Raiders are scoring over 10 points a game.

Texas Tech also has one of the best defenses in the Big 12. They do this despite the fact that their tallest starter is 6’7”. They remain a scrappy unit with 4.5 blocks a game, they have a lot going their way, but they are coming off of a tough loss against Baylor. Still, they are one of the top teams in the conference, and they will be ready for war against West Virginia.

The Mountaineers are coming off of a massive win on the road vs. Kansas State. Derek Culver is a double-double machine. Overall, West Virginia has plenty of momentum that will help them at home. NCAAB odds favor WVU by 2.5 points. What is the best pick?

Keys for Texas Tech to Cover the Spread

Offensively, look for Mac McClung to take over this game. He is Texas Tech’s leading scorer, and he has been efficient this year for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech shoots more free throws than just about any team in college basketball. Because of this, expect Texas Tech to attack the rim and look to score at the line. However, they have to be more consistent from the free-throw line. While they get there often, they don’t always convert. This has improved since the start of conference play, so they should be fine on this front.

Defensively, Texas Tech is going to have to figure out how to win while still being undersized. They lack size in the paint, and that will be a massive concern against West Virginia. Specifically, they will need to find a way to slow down Derek Culver in the paint. He leads the team in shot attempts because of his size advantage in the post. However, he is not a good free-throw shooter. Texas Tech should be physical with him, and it will be fine if they give up a foul or two.

West Virginia hasn’t been a great three-point shooting team, but things have turned around since conference play began. The Red Raiders need to be careful here.

Keys for West Virginia to Cover the Spread

West Virginia is average in a lot of ways, but they have distinct advantages here and there. They need to use those advantages and dominate. For example, they will have an advantage in the post. They should be feeding the paint as often as possible and cleaning up rebounds.

Despite the size advantage, they haven’t been great at getting blocks this year. Look for them to button up inside the paint defensively and hope for the best. Texas Tech will be fighting through the trees, and that might be enough to stop them. Texas Tech doesn’t like shooting the three. McClung and Edwards are the only shooters with a chance to get hot. Outside of them, look for West Virginia to play in the gaps and stop the drives.

Texas Tech has one of the best scoring defenses in college basketball. West Virginia must be incredibly efficient to win this game. If they have too many turnovers, this will get out of hand quickly.

Time for a Pick

The true value will be in the Texas Tech moneyline. While they are coming off of a tough loss, it was to one of the best teams in college basketball. They also had a big win against Texas prior to that loss. They are only underdogs because of the location of this game, and home-court advantage doesn’t matter as much this season.

If Texas Tech can handle the size of West Virginia, they could win this game outright. I think they have proven against other teams that their defense can handle a mismatch, so this does not concern me. With a 2.5-point spread, I’m taking the Red Raiders and running with it.
